I’ll have to burst a few more ego bubbles so sit back, relax, and enjoy.
The human mind is a weird and wonderful thing, whether due to its ability to process different stimuli, to see patterns in things that are, in fact, random, or its ability to seemingly generate ideas out of thin air! No, it actually can’t do that last bit, and as I’m sure most of you would’ve guessed, I’ll be picking on the ‘creative’ writers this time.
Creativity is, in short, your ability to mix and match information coming into your brain. In other words, your ability to recycle information. That’s how the human mind works and there are no exceptions.
The general formula is A (Idea 1) + B(Idea 2) = AB. If you only had knowledge of sticks and stones, there is no way in hell you’d be able to make a light machinegun. But, can we ever get a ‘C’? Nope, but you can get really close to a C, and that’s where talent comes in. Genetics are genetics, the world isn’t fair, and some people are born more creative than others, and you have to accept that. Of course, skill definitely matters more, but if you have two equally-skilled people, the one with talent will win in a fair competition.
Now, putting that aside, how do we get close to C? Basically, it depends on how much you’re able to distort the information coming into your head before spitting the result out. With the sticks and stones analogy, you can break the stick with the rock, or maybe carve something into the stick with the rock. Basic, right? If you use the stone to sharpen the stick, you have a wooden weapon. If you use a rock to sharpen another rock, then use it to carve out a hole in the sharp rock, and then attach that rock to a stick, you get a spear. There, you have something that is close to C. The thing is, if ‘C’ was never in the list of information/ingredients, it can never be (AB)C.
I hope I did a good job explaining the concept of creativity. If you still don’t understand, chances are that it’s my fault so just leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you ASAP. If you have any comments or criticisms, or just want to add something, I’d appreciate it if you could leave it down below as well. Thanks for reading guys!
