I’ve finally finished this short story! Through this story, I wanted to convey that human nature isn’t simple and that a lot goes into human psychology when considering a person’s actions and the motive for that action. “I was just following orders” has been deemed an illegitimate excuse for one’s actions, but when given an order, can the average person decline?
Taking the foot in the door approach, the answer is no. Roughly 6 in 10 people will fail to disobey an order, and this number is further exacerbated by the fact that you may have more than one person around you which influences your decisions (Asch conformity experiments). The takeaway? Usually, the environment, not one’s self, will determine how one will act.
